The potential for green energy in Indonesia is very promising, considering the abundant diversity of natural resources. With a territory consisting of more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia has climatic, geological and biodiversity conditions that support the development of renewable energy.
Solar Energy
Solar energy is one of the most potential sources of green energy in Indonesia. With its geographical position at the equator, Indonesia receives high solar radiation throughout the year. It is estimated that the potential for solar energy can reach 207 GW. The use of solar panels on the roofs of houses, buildings and public facilities can be a significant alternative in reducing dependence on fossil energy.
Wind Energy
Coastal and mountainous areas in Indonesia provide large wind energy potential. Locations such as Nusa Dua and Sumba have ideal wind speeds for wind power plants (PLTB). According to research, the potential for wind energy in Indonesia can reach 9.3 GW, although currently only a small portion has been utilized.
Energy Biomass
Indonesia is also famous for its abundant sources of biomass, such as agricultural waste, crop residues and animal waste. Biomass can be converted into biogas and biofuel, providing a solution to reduce waste and create clean energy. Waste to energy (PSEL) conversion projects in various regions have shown a positive impact in producing energy while reducing pollution.
Geothermal Energy
Indonesia is the country with the largest geothermal reserves in the world. With more than 30 geothermal locations, the geothermal energy potential is estimated to reach 29 GW. Due to its unique geology, geothermal energy can be used as a stable energy source. Projects such as the Wayang Windu PLTP and Geodipa PLTP have demonstrated success in utilizing these resources.
Hydro Energy
Indonesia’s abundant water resources provide great opportunities for hydro energy. Large rivers and dams can be used for hydroelectric power plants (PLTA). It is hoped that the hydro energy potential can reach more than 75 GW, with many projects currently in the development stage.
Continuous Development and Renewable Energy Policy
The Indonesian government has committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix to 23% by 2025 through regulations that support investment and technology. Initiatives such as subsidies for renewable energy projects and public-private partnerships are spurring the sector’s growth.
