Global climate change has become a crucial issue that affects various aspects of life, including biodiversity. The impacts resulting from increasing Earth’s average temperature, changing rainfall patterns, and rising sea levels are greatly affecting habitats and species throughout the world. First of all, one of the main impacts is habitat change. Many animal and plant species have narrow tolerances for certain temperatures and humidity. As temperatures rise, their natural habitats, such as forests, coral reefs and grasslands, begin to undergo drastic changes. For example, the Amazon tropical rainforest faces an increased risk of forest fires, threatening species that can only survive under certain conditions. In addition, climate change is triggering shifts in species migration. Birds, fish and mammals that normally move to certain areas in search of food or reproduction must now adapt to new conditions. For example, fish species such as tuna and mackerel are reportedly moving into cooler waters, changing marine ecosystems and affecting the fishing industry. The greenhouse effect also causes increased ocean acidity, which damages coral reefs. Organisms such as coral, shellfish, and some plankton species are very susceptible to changes in water pH. Damage to coral reefs has an impact on marine biodiversity, considering that coral reefs are habitat for more than 25% of known marine fish species. Climate change is disrupting interaction patterns between species as well. For example, if flowers bloom earlier due to warmer temperatures, pollinating insects such as bees may not appear at the same time, potentially disrupting the plant’s reproductive cycle. This creates an imbalance in the ecosystem that can result in a decline in biodiversity. Species loss is also a serious threat. Many species that are already threatened with extinction are becoming increasingly vulnerable due to climate change. Endemic species that only exist in one place, such as penguins in Antarctica, are at high risk as melting sea ice reduces their habitat. Furthermore, climate change can trigger the spread of diseases and invasive species. As temperatures rise, pathogenic organisms and pests can reach areas that were previously too cold to survive, threatening local species. For example, diseases such as chytridiomycosis in amphibians are starting to spread to wider areas, causing drastic population declines in some areas. Another aspect that is no less important is the socio-economic impact. Loss of biodiversity can increase human dependence on remaining natural resources. In many regions, local communities depend on biodiversity for their livelihoods, so species declines can cause significant economic losses. Reducing natural resources also impacts food security, health and social stability. Therefore, facing climate change is not only a challenge for nature, but also for humanity. Mitigation and adaptation efforts are very important to protect biodiversity. Species conservation, habitat rehabilitation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are necessary steps to ensure the sustainability of ecosystems and life on Earth. Engaging stakeholders from local communities to global organizations is essential in this critical endeavor.
